Free Shed Plans & How To Build A Shed In 10 Steps

free shed plans

So you need a storage shed to keep your outdoor items properly protected. You have shopped around to see what ís available, but you just can’t find one that suits your needs. Well, that ís no problem. You can build one yourself, even if you are not a carpenter. All that is required is, for you to follow some quick and easy step by step plans, and you will have it built in no time.

Step One

Is to determine where you want to build it. You need to have a designated area planned out before you begin. What space you have available will determine the maximum size you can build it.

Step two
Once you know your exact size it ís a good idea to rough sketch what you want. There are many home improvement stores that you can take your sketch to. They will draft up your storage shed  plans for you, according to the specs you provide them with. They will also supply you with a list of materials that you will require. So now you have your plans. In addition they will provide you with a guide on how to perform each step.
free shed plans

Step Three
Purchase the materials you will need as outlined in your plan. It ís a good idea to have everything at hand so you do not have to keep running out for supplies once you start construction.

Step Four
Now you are ready to start. Level your ground and prepare to lay the foundation. You would have already decided whether you are going to have a wood plank floor or concrete slab type.
Step Five
Next comes the side walls. Put your materials aside that you are going to use for this. It is better to construct the walls on the ground then lift them into position once they are together. Just follow your guide for the how to instructions.
Step Six
Now its time to start the roof. You will need to build your trusses. So construct one and then use it as a template for the rest. Once again  follow your guide on how to build the trusses.
Step Seven
Your storage shed should now be taking on some shape. Its time to build the end walls. How you do this will depend on what you have chosen in your plans. Be sure to stay with your original plans.
Step Eight
Now you are getting down to the final steps. The trim is just as important as the rest of your structure. Its what gives it that finished look so don’t scrimp here.
Step Nine
Your last two steps are applying the shingles for the roof then treating the wood. The wood must have some type of protective coating on it to protect it from the elements and rotting. This can be varnish, stains or paints whatever is your preference.
Step Ten
You’re done! All that ís left is to sit back and admire your completed storage shed. If you hadn’t built it yourself you would think it was a professional store bought model.

IImportant Tips For Building A Chicken Coop

If you have decided not to buy a prefabricated ark but would rather learn how to build one yourself, there are a number of things that you should take into consideration before you rush out to source or purchase the plans.

Legal Stuff

Before you build your chicken house or start to keep chickens please make sure that you check with your municipality or town hall to ensure that it is legal for you to do so. I also recommend that you let you neighbours know so that you can address any concerns that they might have.

 What Size Coop?
Trying to decide on the best size can be quite difficult. We all know about battery kept hens which have so little space they can barely stand up.  I always want to try and make my hens as happy as possible, one of the really enjoyable things about keeping chickens is to see happy and contented birds. This information and product page is designed to help you to build a small unit.

The word small is relative, what is small to a farmer with several acres might be a model and run that is perfect for forty or fifty chickens. I am assuming however that you are looking for something in which to keep between 2 and 6 chickens. Just a reminder that chickens like company so always keep at least two. Try to provide your chickens with minimum of 4 square feet each if they are medium sized hens, more space is of course better. If you are thinking of keeping bantams then I think a bit less than that is OK.

What Type of Hen House & Location.

The type of hen house you want will depend upon the number of chickens you want to keep as well as the space you have available. If you have a limited garden area we suggest a portable model, if you have a much larger area in which to keep your chickens then you can of course build a more permanent house and run. A very important consideration is drainage. Make sure that your chicken house and pen is in an area that is well drained. Wet and muddy ground is not conducive for happy and healthy chickens.

Lighting is important to chickens. Try to position the coop in an area that does get some sun for part of the day. This will help to keep the house and nesting boxes dry. If you have really hot summers, then an area that provides some shade for the birds is also very important. If you have cold and damp winters then it is important to provide some artificial light which can also double as a heat lamp. You can also use infrared lamps. Just ensure that the lamp is properly installed.

Good ventilation is really important if you want to keep your chickens healthy. Good plans will take this into consideration. If you live in a windy area then you will want to ensure that your chickens get fresh air but not blasts of wind. You also want to make sure that the ventilation spaces are not large enough for small predators to get at your hens.

Nesting Boxes

Comfortable and easily accessible nesting boxes are important. You want to provide your hens with enough room to comfortably lay their eggs, but they also need to feel secure as well. Having a few inches of space around them in the box will give them enough room to move around and settle down in, but will also help them to feel protected. Having a perch area available is also something that is important to them.

Easy to Clean

When you build your unit, I suggest that you use plans which are designed so that it can esily be cleaned. Easy access to the nesting boxes and to the rest of the coop is very important. the nesting material will need to be changed regularly. The droppings on the floor also have to be cleaned out on a regular basis as well. The easier it is for you to get into the hen house part itself the cleaner you will be able to keep it. A clean hen house will help to keep down the number of lice, mites and pests.

When you build your coop, take some time to consider what kinds of predators are likely to take an interest in your chickens. In the United Kingdom foxes and weasels can be a very troublesome predator.  Where I live in Canada, the odd coyote and raccoon are the biggest concern.  If you have predators that can climb or dig, take special precautions to prevent them from getting into the run. Wire mesh over the top will stop climbers. If you have “hunters” that dig, try a wire mesh skirt around the run held in place with paving stones. This is a particularly convenient way to give added protection to a chicken tractor.

There are several different resources for small plans. I particularly like some of the ones that are available online and that can be easily and instantly downloaded to your computer. Most of these are very reasonably priced. The problem is which one should you buy. Below are our favourite plans and blueprints.

Poultry Books

Posted by admin | Posted in Poultry Books - Books on Chickens | Posted on 01-04-2016

Books on Chickens

Poultry Books and Books on Chickens are a fantastic resource for information on keeping, breeding and raising chickens. There are many titles available. We have tried to narrow the field down for you so that you can find the best Poultry Books. Some of the titles we recommend go beyond information on chickens, they also have advice and tips on growing your own produce, recipes etc. You can’t go wrong with a good book.

For our customers in the United Kingdom we have also provided a link so that as well as shopping for chicken coops in the UK you can also easily peruse our list of recommended books. These are not just books on how to keep chickens, but we have also included recipe books and a list of the very popular River Cottage Books by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Among our absolute favourites in this collection is The River Cottage Cookbook which is a fountain of information on keeping chickens, pigs and other farm animals. This is one of the best books on “growing your own” and all around information that we have come across.

For those of you who live in North America please see our list of fantastic books which are easily available to you. We have tried to find these at the best online prices we can.

Books On Raising Chickens
The River Cottage Cookbook is one that we highly recommend, especially if you are interested in keeping other animals besides chickens. This is not just a recipe book. Hugh Fearnely-Whittingstall who is a very popular food writer and broadcaster in Britain has written a book ( one of several in a series ) that anyone wanting to raise chickens, pigs, sheep and cattle in a small way will find very useful. It is engagingly written by someone who really makes you think about the responsibility we have towards the animals we raise and the land we live on.

Although this book is about small scale farming and cooking in Britain ( there are numerous recipes ) it has applications for the urban gardener anywhere. If you are interested in growing vegetables, raising chickens, cooking, mouthwatering recipes,  making sausages,  fishing etc. etc. this is a wonderful book. If you are an armchair “farmer” you will find many hours of enjoyment in these pages.

Tour de Coop

Chicken in coopIf you are interested in different chicken coop designs there are many resources available. Perhaps one of the most interesting and innovative chicken coop shows is in Cedar Rapids Iowa. It has been named the Tour de Coop, a fantastic name for what is sure to be a really interesting show. Cedar Rapids is not the only city to have a Tour de Coop, several other U.S. cities also have these tours. At the bottom of this post is a video from the Portland, Oregon 2010 tour. This excerpt from the Eastern Iowa Life will give you some idea of what visitors to the Cedar Rapids Tour can expect. Original article by Cindy Hadish

The 2011 Tour de Coop on Saturday, Oct. 8, will showcase six Cedar Rapids chicken coops and serve as a fundraiser to build a coop for the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter, says Rebecca Mumaw of Cedar Rapids Citizens for the Legalization of Urban Chickens.

“It should be a fun time where families can tour various coops and talk with the owners about their coop designs and their style of raising hens,” says Mumaw, whose southeast Cedar Rapids coop is featured on the tour.

Original article and photos.

Apparently the coop which is going to be built for the Animal Shelter will a Portable Coop. This will enable it to be easily moved to future Animal Shelter sites. The Animal Shelter will use this Portable Chicken Coop to house stray and abandoned chickens as well as ones which have had to be removed from their owners.

Interestingly even Vancouver, Canada has a municipal chicken coop which is also used to house stray chickens. Vancouver recently enabled a by law allowing people to keep a few backyard hens.

The chicken coops on display at the Tour range from one which is a converted children’s playhouse with an adjacent A frame run, two storey hen houses, a coop with a green roof,  (that is there is grass growing on the roof ) and even one which features carvings by the owner.

At the Tour de Coop the owners will be on hand to answer questions and give construction advice.

This is a fantastic idea and a show which other towns and municipalities might want to consider emulating. Keeping backyard chickens is becoming more and more popular in many urban areas so the interest in something similar the Cedar Rapids show is certain to find many enthusiasts.  Many urban and backyard chicken farmers would probably be very interested in building and exhibiting their designs for Portable chicken coops and other backyard styles of coop.

Backyard Chicken Coops For Great Pets

Posted by admin | Posted in Chickens as Pets | Posted on 09-02-2016

CHICKEN COOPSo many cities, towns and municipalities allow backyard chickens these days. Raleigh, North Carolina also has a Tour d’Coop similar to other Chicken Coop Tours held in other cities around America.

Most people keep chickens and erect backyard chicken coops so that they can have a ready source of eggs. Not everyones initial decision to keep chickens is made primarily to produce a source of food.

In a recent article by Mark Rutledge at The Daily Reflector he describes why Neal Brown and his wife decided to keep chickens. Original Article.

“Our granddaughters said they wanted either a pony or chickens,” Brown said. “We went with chickens.”

The retired railroad conductor went to work last fall on building a playhouse for granddaughters Sarah Ruth, 3, and Caroline, 5. The structure’s bottom half became an indoor/outdoor chicken coop this spring.Playing off the unique building’s dual purpose, an attached sign reads, “Chicks Over Chicks”.

The four hens that the Brown’s keep seem to be more like family pets. They are tame enough for the granddaughters to pick up and carry around.

The chickens have the run of the backyard and are somewhat destructive. Neal Brown has been obliged to fence off some of his plants to keep them from being disturbed by the hens. His one complaint seems to be that they don’t want to eat weeds, but  are happy to eat everything else. Fortunately the eggs that is chickens produce appear to have made up for any inconvenience.

Many backyard chicken farmers will be able to identify Brown’s complaint about the hens not wanting to eat weeds. However, the Browns and their grandchildren are not the first people to become attached to their hens and see view them as pets rather than as a source of food. Keeping chickens away from your plants is one of the great advantages of housing hens in a Portable Chicken Coop.

Chicken Runs

Posted by admin | Posted in Chicken Runs & Pens | Posted on 05-02-2016

Tags: , , ,

Good Chicken Runs are extremely important if you want to keep your chickens safe during the day when they are outside. Depending where you live, there are many predators that enjoy nothing more than a nice chicken dinner. Where I live we have to keep an eye out for coyotes which have now become so used to people and living near urban areas that our pets and hens have become a prime target. We also get raccoons in our backyard and hawks neither of which are adverse to trying to get a chicken either. If you live in the United Kingdom then it is possible that foxes are your biggest worry. Other than wild animals, keeping your chickens safe from the local cats and dogs is also something that you really should consider.

While many Portable Chicken Coops come with chicken runs attached, many hen houses do not. It is however possible to purchase pre-built chicken pens some of which can be attached to a hen house or placed somewhere where you can easily put or entice your chickens inside. The smaller chicken pens that best suit the backyard chicken farmer are ones which are portable, so that you can give your birds a new feeding area every two or three days.

If building chicken runs is not something that appeals to you, it is of course possible to buy them online. There are several different sizes and models which although they require some assembly, save you the bother of doing everything from scratch. The only drawback is that most of them have to be attached to a coop or hen house, which is specifically designed for that run. The one exception that I could find is the A Frame Run Briar Chicken House, 6 feet.
